TITANIUM MATRIX COMPOSITES
The use of high strength matrix metals such as titanium provides toughness to complement the silicon carbide fibres. They do not behave in the same way as the resin matrix in polymer composites. Titanium metal composites show good fatigue resistance leading to extended life. Long fibre metal composites require a uniform distribution of fibre throughout the matrix metal. The reinforced region is bonded into the surrounding alloy to ensure that loads are transferred between the component's fixtures and the fibre. This utilises fully the material's strength, stiffness and fatigue performance.
